Abstract

‘Active Travel’ refers to a form of transport that engages the individual in physical activity e.g. walking, cycling and scooting. The Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013, section 10, states there is a duty on the Welsh Ministers and Local Authorities to ‘exercise functions to promote active travel’. The objective of the contract will be: - To raise awareness among children, staff, parents and governors on the benefits of active travel. - To engage children in activities encouraging and enabling uptake of active travel. - To work closely with school staff to develop school champions with specific roles to promote active travel. - To create a whole school culture of active travel within project schools that can be sustained over time. - To communicate the benefits of active travel and encourage its uptake through a variety of channels to the wider community. The aims of the contract will be: - To increase the number of children and young people regularly travelling actively to school. - To give children the confidence, enthusiasm and skills to travel actively and safely to school. - To give teachers, parents and governors the tools and skills to promote and support active travel within their school and the wider community.
